John Dryden has “Whistling to keep myself from being afraid,” in Amphitryon (1690), and Robert Blair has “Whistling aloud to bear his courage up” in The Grave (1743). Whistling in the dark also means to to be optimistic against all odds, but the year in which it is first recorded is unclear. |
