Pollyanna. Pollyanna Whittier, the child hero of Eleanor M. Porter’s eponymous novel Pollyanna (1913), was noted for playing “the glad game,” in which she tried to find the bright side of even the darkest, most dire situations. She is given no credit for this trait, however, for her name has ever since been used to describe a foolish optimist, woman or man. |
