词汇 | pontiff |
词源 | pontiff. How the title of the pope derives from the Latin word pons for a bridge is not completely clear. The word came into the language in the late 17th century, via French, from the Latin pontifex, meaning a “high priest” of Rome, and was ap- plied to bishops as well as the pope. Some scholars believe pon- tifex is of Etruscan origin, but most derive it from Latin pon- tifex, meaning “bridge builder,” the Tiber bridges of ancient Rome said to be the responsibility of its priests. |
