Pomato was first used by Luther Burbank in 1905 for the fruit of a hybrid potato, but his creation didn’t catch on, and pomato later became the name of the potato-tomato plant, with the potatoes growing underground on the roots of the plant and the tomatoes growing above the ground on the plant branches or vines. The chief drawback for this novelty is that potatoes can transfer several diseases to tomatoes and vice- versa, which is the reason potato fields on farms are generally widely separated from tomato fields. One of the earliest exper- iments with tomatoes, in 1910, produced a tomato-eggplant chimera having characteristics of each parent on the same branch. Many such experiments have been made. At North Carolina State University, for example, tomatoes were grafted on tobacco plant roots. The result was a tomato with a high nicotine content. See tigon.
