词汇 | we who are about to die salute you |
词源 | We who are about to die salute you. Roman gladiators did not originate these words in a Roman arena, hoping for a “thumbs up” from the emperor or the crowd. According to his- torian Fik Meijer in The Gladiators (2005), “It was not gladiators who uttered the immortal salute, but 9,000 prisoners about to engage in a mock sea battle on Lake Fucino organized by the emperor Claudius. . . .” Longfellow used the words in his poem Morituri Salutamus (1875): “ ‘O Caesar, we who are about to die/ Salute you!’ was the gladiators’ cry / In the arena, standing face to face / With death . . .” |
