Vanessa. A legendary English literary lover. Esther Vanhom- righ (pronounced “Vanummery”) met Jonathan Swift in 1708, fell deeply in love with him, and followed him to Ireland, where she later proposed marriage to him. Dean Swift gently rejected her in his 1713 poem “Cademus and Vanessa.” Vanessa was his pet name for Esther (composed of Van of her last name plus Essa for Esther), and Cademus is an anagram of Decanus, Latin for Dean: When in 1723 Swift broke off their relationship, due to her jealousy, she is said to have died of a broken heart. She had preserved his poem among her papers, and it was pub- lished three years later.
