Lolita. A Lolita has in the last 25 years become the word for a nymphet or adolescent nymphomaniac. Capitalized still, the term derives from the name of the main character in Vladimir Nabokov’s novel Lolita (1955). It has been pointed out recently that in 1916—39 years before Nabokov’s novel was released— German author Heinz von Lichberg published a short story called “Lolita” which also features a narrator obsessed with a young girl, among other similarities. A May 23, 2004, New York Times Magazine piece by Christopher Caldwell treats the sub- ject at some length.
