V-1, V-2. Toward the end of World War II the Nazis as a des- peration measure unleashed their newly developed Vergeltung- swaffe (“reprisal weapon”) against Britain. Between June 1944 and March 1945 the pilotless jet rocket with explosive warhead killed more than 5,500 people, mostly London civilians. The V-2 was an improved version that became the basis for postwar rocket design. Both were also called “buzz bomb” (for their buzzing noise on approach), “robot bomb,” “doodlebug,” and “flying bomb.”
