Words coined in 1798 by English country doctor Edward Jenner (1749–1823), whose book An Inquiry Into the Causes and Effects of the Variolae Vaccinae has saved millions of people throughout the world. Jenner, who ob- served that milkmaids infected with cowpox were immune to smallpox, began vaccinating with his volunteer James Phipps in 1796. Despite Jenner’s defeat of the world’s deadliest infec- tious disease of the times, there were still many who distrusted the discovery.
