Utopian Turtletop; Edsel. The esteemed poet Marianne Moore in 1955 was commissioned by Henry Ford to create a name for a new Ford car. Moore came up with Utopian Turtle- top, which, of course, Ford didn’t use, though he thoughtfully sent the poet a dozen roses. It soon became apparent that Moore was lucky not to have become linked with the car, which as the Edsel (named after Ford’s son Edsel) is unfairly remem- bered due to its supposed defects as the most laughable car in automotive history. See edsel. |
