词源	dumpy. Dumpy, for “a short fat person,” is thought to be re- lated to dump in its sense of melancholy (see down in the dumps), but no one knows exactly how. Perhaps because such people appeared melancholy, perhaps from the German adjec- tive dumpf, which means “heavy” in another sense.
