hodgepodge. A mixture of many things, a conglomeration, a confused mess. The word, used since the late 15th century, de- rives from the French hocher, “to shake together,” and pot, “pot,” which yielded the French word hochepot for a stew made of many ingredients. Hochepot became hotchpotch and, finally, hodgepodge in English. |
