Down syndrome. This congenital disorder caused by the presence of an extra 21st chromosome is named after British physician John L. H. Down (1828–96), among the first who studied the condition. Those affected with Down syndrome are mildly to severely mentally retarded, are usually short, and have a flat facial profile. The genetic disorder is also called Down’s syndrome, trisomy-21, and mongolism. The latter term is rarely used anymore; in fact, its hurtful racial connota- tions were the main reason scientists named the disease after Dr. Down about 1960.
