last leaf. Said of an aged person, the last of his or her genera- tion. Oliver Wendell Holmes invented the expression in his 1831 poem “The Last Leaf,” honoring Revolutionary War hero Major Thomas Melville, who had participated in the Boston Tea Party. O. Henry, one of the most neglected of American writers, wrote a memorable short story entitled “The Last Leaf ” that was made into a movie. |
