pistol. The pistolet was originally a 15th-century dagger made in Pistoia, Italy, from which it took its name. Later small guns were made in that metalwork and gun-making center and were given the name pistolet, too, this subsequently shortened to pistol. The word has several meanings besides its use as a synonym for a hand gun. Among waiters and coun- termen in New York delis, pistol can mean pastrami, as when a waiter shouts to the cook, “One pistol on rye.” Among Maine lobstermen pistol means a lobster with only one claw or none at all.
