Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Pittsfield, Massachusetts; Pitt’s pictures. The great English statesman William Pitt, the Elder (1708–78), is one of the few people to have two U.S. cit- ies named after him. (Pittsburgh, however, was named after Fort Pitt, which had been named in his honor.) Pitt, the Younger (1759–1806), is remembered for the historical Pitt’s pictures, blind windows that were blocked up because as prime minister he augmented England’s “window tax” in 1784 and 1797. Rather than pay the tax, people boarded up their windows. |
