pit bull. Dogs of several different breeds—all crosses of bull- dogs and terriers—are called pit bulls. So is a mongrel-type dog conforming to these general types. All were originally bred for the “sport” of bull-baiting (see bulldog) and are now used in the cruel blood “sport” of dogfighting. In a small pit or arena, the dogs are paired against each other in a fight to the death while spectators bet on the contest. Such vicious and fearless dogs, noted for their powerful, tenacious bites, have also been used as personal guard dogs in recent times and caused much trouble. One study shows that of 29 people killed by dogs in the U.S. over a four-year period, 21 were victims of pit bulls. Lately, the term pit bull has been extended to mean any very aggres- sive, mean person who is looking for a fight.
