pitch, pitch-black. The dictionary definition of pitch is “any of various thick, dark, sticky substances obtained from the dis- tillation residue of coal tar, wood tar, or petroleum and used for waterproofing, roofing, caulking, and paving.” But there are many other uses for the word pitch. For example, pitch-black and pitch-dark mean extremely dark, each expression com- monly used today. Pitch and pay means to pay up immediately, while to pay a ship means to cover it with pitch. |
