词汇 | pizza |
词源 | pizza. One of America’s favorite foods, pizza is also one of its most recent treats, the word pizza not recorded in the U.S. until 1935. Pizza’s ultimate origins are unknown. One theory holds it comes from Italian pizza (or pitta) for the same, with the Ital- ian word deriving from an unknown Greek word. Another the- ory has pizza coming from Italian pizzicare, “to pinch or pluck,” in reference to the making of a pizza pie. The term pizzeria was first recorded in 1943, while pizza parlor appeared in print about five years later. In some regions, including New York, slice is the word to use when ordering a piece of pizza. Other places use piece exclusively. A Neopolitan pizza is the classic thin-sliced pizza, while a Sicilian pizza is a square, thick pie. In England a pizza parlor is called a pizza bar. |
