dog eat dog. According to the Dictionary of Americanisms, this is a phrase from the American frontier first recorded in 1834. It means ruthless competition with no holds barred; eve- ryone for himself or herself; tit for tat. British poet Thomas Gray in an 1858 letter quoted a saying meaning exactly the op- posite: “I cannot promise any special instruction and shall take no fee. ‘Dog does not eat dog’ is the saying, you know.” Whether these two sayings arose independently or have something to do with each other hasn’t been firmly established. |
