dime novel. American publisher Erastus Flavel Beadle (1821–94) named all such melodramatic, often lurid, romantic or adventure paperbacks in 1860 when he first called books that he published the Dime Book Series. The first book issued in his series was Malaeska, the Indian Wife of the White Hunter. The “dollar books for a dime,” as it was advertised, sold over 300,000 copies its first year.
