词汇 | wampum |
词源 | wampum. Wampumpeak was a name American Indians in New England gave to shell money. Like most Indian names— including the longer forebears of squash, hickory, and rac- coon—the colonists found wampumpeak too long and short- ened it to wampum, which it remains today. All Indians didn’t have the same name for shell money. Virginia Indians called wampum roanoke; the Mohave Indians called it pook; in north- ern California it was called ali-qua-chick; and in the Northwest it was hiaqua. But only wampum remains well known today. |
