sainfoin. This perennial herb of the pea family is also called “holy clover” and has long been used as fodder, although it is sometimes planted in flower garden borders. It has among the most unusual of scientific names, Onobrychis viciaefolia; the genus name Onobrychis derives from the Greek for “food for asses,” alluding to the plant’s use for forage. Sainfoin, some- times erroneously called “saintfoin,” takes its name from the Latin sanus, “healthy,” plus foin, “hay.” |
