American Indian women of certain tribes whose noses were cut off because of their adultery. “He reck- oned he . . . would . . . never have to cut Teal Eye’s nose off . . . the way a Piegan did when he found his woman had lain in se- cret with another man. It was a sight, the squaws you saw with no end to their noses. Cut-nose women, they were called,” wrote A. B. Guthrie Jr. in The Big Sky (1947). |
