Kiwanis. Upper Michigan Indians used the term keewanis to mean “make oneself known” or “to express oneself.” When a Detroit club promoting good fellowship and civic interests was founded in 1915, a local historian suggested that this Indian word be used for the club name. Feeling that “self-expression” suited the purpose of the club, which of course later became a national organization, members adopted the name with its spelling slightly changed to Kiwanis. |
