词汇 faro
词源
faro. Faro, which is now a card game principally played in gambling houses, derives its name from pharaoh, but so far as we know, from no particular king except the king of spades. The game came to England from France or Italy and little more is known about it than that. The French version was named pharaon (pharaoh), but this was altered to faro as it grew popu- lar among the English. It is assumed that at a certain stage in the game’s history, a likeness of an Egyptian pharaoh appeared either on all the cards, or, more likely, on the king of spades. See also in hock.
