词汇 | fare-you-well |
词源 | fare-you-well. It seems much older, but this expression is an Americanism that has been traced back to 1775. It means: 1) a state of perfection, to the last point, as in “His book is docu- mented to a fare-you-well”; 2) the maximum effect, as in “She played each scene to a fare-you-well.” Still heard occasionally as fare-thee-well. |
