F.B.I. Its abbreviation was being used almost as soon as the Federal Bureau of Investigation was named in 1935. The first recorded use of the initials, however, came a year later, in 1936, when it was used in an article describing “Baby Face” Nelson shooting it out with an FBI agent. Today F.B.I. or FBI is usually used instead of the longer name. The bureau is also called the Feds, which was the name the Confeds (Confederates) used for federal U.S. troops during the Civil War.
