Another explanation for elegans’s youth-and-old-age nickname may be the stiff hairs on the stem or the coarse plant itself, in contrast to the soft flow- ers, or the plant’s tendency to develop the powdery mildew dis- ease when poorly cultivated. But the spring frost analogy is nicer.
