词汇 | put one-s foot in one-s mouth |
词源 | put one’s foot in one’s mouth. Every time he opens his mouth he puts his foot in it is first recorded in the 1770s, when it was said of Dublin politician Sir Boyle Roche, who made remarks in his speeches like: “Half the lies our opponents tell about me are not true!” The expression was probably suggested by the earlier to put one’s foot in it. See also put your foot in it. |
