indigo. Indigo derives from Greek indikon, Indian, because the plant, which produces a blue dye, was an important crop in India. The dye plant was also much valued in the Carolina Low Country. Introduced there in the early 18th century, it did more to enrich the South Carolinian plantocracy than New World gold did for the Spaniards. |
