词汇 index librorum prohibitorum
词源
Index Librorum Prohibitorum. Often abbreviated to the In- dex, this list of books forbidden by the Catholic church is prac- tically a synonym for censorship. Established by the Holy Office in 1559, the Index mostly condemned books for doctrinal or moral reasons. Pope Paul VI ended publication of the Index in 1966, making a paperback book that had once banned as many as 5,000 books no more than a “moral guide” without force of church law, though the Vatican can still issue warnings about books that might be “dangerous” to the faithful. No American novelist has ever been listed in the Index. Among prominent writers who did make the list are: Boccaccio, Galileo, Bacon, Milton, Locke, Gibbon, Defoe, Descartes, Montaigne, Spinoza, Rousseau, Kant, Stendhal, Hugo, Casanova, Balzac, Dumas, Flaubert, Gide, Sartre, and Moravia. See also bowdlerize; comstockery.
