Indian. At least one writer has speculated that Indian may have been suggested to Columbus as a name for the Taino peo- ple he encountered because they were so friendly, peaceful, and gentle, una gente in Dios, a people of God. But there is no proof of this, most etymologists believing these people were mistak- enly named by Columbus because he thought he had reached the Indies of Asia, the first but not the worst mistake immi- grants made regarding the native Americans.
