Indian head penny. A favorite of coin collectors, the Indian head penny was issued by the U.S. Government from 1859 to 1909. The “Indian” depicted on the coin is not really an Indian; the figure was modeled by Sara Longacre, the daughter of a U. S. mint official. Mint officials have on several occasions used relatives and friends to model for figures on coins. The wife of noted American poet Wallace Stevens, for example, posed for the goddess of Liberty on the Liberty half-dollar. See also cent; penny. |
