Indian book. This interesting use of the word book is record- ed in Carlisle S. Abbott’s Recollections of a California Pioneer (1917): “Upon reaching the summit of the mountain we came to an Indian book which must have been hundreds of years old, for it was now thirty feet in diameter and nearly five feet high in the center.” Such “Indian books” were accumulations of nat- ural objects like sticks and stones left on a trail by passing Indi- ans to inform their friends that they had come this way.
