bridge. Bridge is a card game derived from whist that first became popular in the 1880s. Its name is of obscure origin. Since it was earlier called biritch, some scholars believe the word derives ultimately from the Turkish bir, “one,” plus iic, “three,” referring to one hand of cards in the game being ex- posed while the other three are concealed. Bridge was possibly introduced to Europe from the Near East, but there is no record of a Turkish game with a name anything like bir iic. |
