vanilla. Vanilla was thought to be wickedly aphrodisiac in Elizabethan England because the pod of the plant resembled the vagina. In fact, the word vanilla comes from the Spanish for “little vagina.” Queen Elizabeth I used vanilla to flavor her mar- zipan, making it a favorite flavoring for candy ever since, and Thomas Jefferson was the first to introduce it as a flavoring in America. Today, however, natural vanilla is in short supply and we generally use a synthetic; there isn’t enough natural vanilla in the world to flavor the vanilla ice cream made in America alone. Needless to say, natural vanilla is much more flavorsome than the synthetic product. See avocado; vagina. |
