al-Qaeda. The name of the terrorist organization headed by Saudi-born terrorist Osama bin Laden, which is thought by many to have destroyed the World Trade Center in New York City on September 11, 2001, by hijacking two planes and crash- ing them into the Twin Towers. Another plane hijacked by al- Qaeda terrorists crashed in Pennsylvania, apparently before it could accomplish the terrorists’ aim of destroying the White House, and a fourth plane struck the Pentagon, causing many deaths and much damage. Al-Qaeda is Arabic for “the base,” or “military headquarters.” See suicide bomber.
