词源 | crestfallen. A term from the ancient “sport” of cockfighting, crestfallen refers to a defeated bird that stands waiting for the death blow with crest fallen to its beak, no longer erect and proud. Shakespeare appears to have been the first writer to ap- ply the term to humans, in Henry VI (1593). See show the white feather. |
