A relatively new word for a strange or crazy person that dates back to the early 1950s, when it was apparently fashioned in Hollywood from the much earlier cuckoo. “Kookie” was the name of a popular TV series actor of the time. Today both kook and kooky are heard more frequently than cuckoo.
