Devil’s Island, the former French penal colony off the coast of French Guiana, isn’t so named because it was like hell for prisoners sent there, or because the climate was as hot as hell. The island, one of the three Safety Islands, takes its name from the dangerous turbulent waters surrounding it, the major reason why escape from it was so difficult.
