Devil’s paintbrush. The strangest but most apt name for a gun ever coined. The maxim machine gun was dubbed the “Devil’s paintbrush” because it spewed out bullets so fast that the earth, grass, trees, and anybody on them were drenched or touched scarlet red. Devil’s paintbrush is also a popular name for hawkweed (Pilosella aurantiaca), a troublesome weed that bears brilliantly colored flowers ranging from yel- low to orange-red that are exceptionally beautiful in meadow masses. |
