词汇 | corporation |
词源 | corporation. Corporation can be either singular or plural, depending on whether the writer regards it as an entity or has in mind the individual stockholders. Corporations generally use the plural in their communications (“Write for our cata- logue,” etc.), but it is equally correct to say “Sears have issued their catalog,” or “Sears has issued its catalog.” Many great writ- ers have mixed a singular verb and a plural pronoun, as in the second example, including the framers of the Constitution. Tertullian, one of the fathers of the Christian church, coined the word corporation in a.d. 190 from the Latin corporare, “to make into a body,” using it in ecclesiastical law. By the 17th century the word began to take on the meaning that it has today. |
