peat. The word peat was first applied to the small bits of this substance used as fuel in peat fires. Keeping this in mind, it is easy to see the derivation of peat, from the English piece, which may come from the Latin pecia, “a bit.” Peat, of course, is an or- ganic material found in marshy ground, composed of partially decayed vegetable matter and is much used by gardeners in im- proving garden soil. |
