pelican in the wilderness. A lonely person, a recluse. The term comes from the Bible: “I am like a pelican of the wilder- ness, / I am like an owl of the desert. / I watch and am / As a sparrow alone upon the housetop.” (Ps. 102:6–7) It is used in the title of a recent book by Isabel Colegate: A Pelican in the Wilderness: Hermits, Solitaires, and Recluses (2002).
