词汇 | juvenalian |
词源 | Juvenalian. Savagely satirical, like the verse satires of Juvenal (ca. 60–ca. 140), the greatest Roman satirist, whose style was imitated by John Dryden, Dr. Johnson, Alexander Pope, and, especially, Jonathan Swift, among many. Juvenal wrote 16 sat- ires attacking the vices, abuses, and fatuities of Roman life, sat- ires marred by an excessive hatred of the rich and the condem- nation of all women. But though kindly humor is absent in his pages and his unsparing pessimisim fills all of them, his vigor- ous, ironic, terse style make him one of the world’s greatest writers of satire. |
