词汇 | joe |
词源 | joe. Joe may have become slang for coffee, as in a cuppa joe, because of the great consumption of it by G.I. Joes during World War II, according to Mark Pendergast in his fascinating book Uncommon Grounds: The History of Coffee and How It Transformed Our World (1999). This seems unlikely, as the term is first recorded in 1930 as tramp and underworld slang. Another interesting theory is that the word derives from Ste- phen Foster’s song “Old Black Joe” (1850), a perennial favorite like so many of his songs (“Oh! Susannah,” “Swanee,” “My Old Kentucky Home,” “Camptown Races,” “Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair,” among others). But no matter how appealing, there is no firm evidence for any of these theories. |
