We don’t want to fight, yet by Jingo if we do We’ve got the ships, we’ve got the men, and the money, too This refrain from the British music hall song “The Great Mac- Dermott” (1878), urging Great Britain to fight the Russians and prevent them from taking Constantinople, gives us the expres- sion jingoism, for “bellicose chauvinism or excessive patriot- ism.” Jingo is a euphemism for “by Jesus” that dates back to the late 17th century. The British fleet did scare off the Russians from Constantinople. |
