词汇 | survival of the fittest |
词源 | survival of the fittest. The term was coined not by Charles Darwin but by British philosopher Herbert Spencer. “This sur- vival of the fittest which I have here sought to express in me- chanical terms, is that which Mr. Darwin has called ‘natural se- lection, or the preservation of favored races in the struggle for life,’ ” Spencer wrote in his Principles of Biology (1864–67). Dar- win approved of Spencer’s coinage in his epochal On the Origin of the Species by Means of Natural Selection (1859), which sold out on the day it was printed. Spencer was the founder of evo- lutionary philosophy, his ideal being the unification of all knowledge on the basis of the single all-providing principle of evolution. |
