词汇 | swanee river |
词源 | Swanee River. The first line in Stephen Foster’s famous song “The Old Folks at Home” should go “Way down upon the Su- wannee River,” for there is no Swanee River. The American composer first considered the Pedee and Zazoo Rivers, but set- tled on the Suwannee for his song after consulting an atlas. Needing a two-syllable name, he changed Suwanee to Swanee. Had he seen the Suwannee, he might not have immortalized it. Running through swamps for most of its course in Georgia and Florida, the Suwannee’s water is coffee black. Originally it was called the San Juan, which was corrupted into Suwannee by constant mispronunciation. |
